Overview
The VoiceXML Forum is an industry organization
founded by AT&T, IBM, Lucent Technologies
and Motorola, and is chartered to establish and
promote the Voice eXtensible Markup Language (VoiceXML)
as a standard essential to making Internet content
and information accessible via voice and phone.
With the backing and support of these three world-class
founders, and the support of leading Internet
and speech industry players, the VoiceXML Forum
is uniquely positioned to make voice- and phone-enabled
Internet applications a near-term reality.
Objectives
The VoiceXML Forum has four main objectives:
- To
develop an open VoiceXML specification and then
submit it for standardization
- To
educate the industry about the need for a standard
voice markup language
- To
attract industry support and participation in
the VoiceXML Forum
- To
promote industry-wide use of the resulting standard
to create innovative content and service applications
Timeline
The VoiceXML timeline includes a Forum announcement
in 1Q99 with initial specification to be available
for public comment and contribution in April of
1999. A final proposed specification will be submitted
for standardization to W3C, the World Wide Web
Consortium later this year.
